The Uruguayan Psycho Pedagogic Institution (“IPPU” for its name in Spanish) is a non-profit organization, created in 1980, in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. Its goal is the promotion of mental health, prevention of mental disorders, and to increase awareness among professionals and the public through research and training in the Mental Health and Education Areas related to childhood and adolescence with developmental disorders, particularly child psychosis and pervasive developmental disorders (autism is included), communication and learning disorders and psychotic disorders diagnosed in childhood.
In 1983, IPPU became a Foundation by decree Nbr. 2101 AS 3611/83 of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uruguay. To date, more than 5.500 general consults have been evaluated and more than 1.000 psycho pedagogical tests have been performed. Also, IPPU has provided integral assistance to more than 400 children, adolescents and their families. More than 400 local and foreign technicians have been trained. IPPU focuses on the detection and prevention of developmental disorders, which technical publications have been made.
Presently, IPPU’s activities are developed within the following programs:

Institutionally, IPPU has:

  • The support of the School of Medicine of the University of the Republic. Resolution N° 23/985.


  • Public Health Ministry resolution that provides the Institution with Scientific Status. Resolution 795, of 18/08/92.


  • Public Health Ministry authorization to work in the Children Mental Health Area. Bylaw 508.


  • Authorization of the Public Teaching National Administration (ANEP for its name in Spanish) and of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Special Education Area.


  • Ministry of Economy and Finance support. Law 15.809, Art. 618/987.


  • Ministry of Economy and Finance authorization to receive tax-deductible funds from companies. Law 16.462, art. 238, decree 299/99.
